SONIC: Web based resources to support student learning. The Fund for the Development of Teaching and Learning (FDTL) phase 4, supported the three year Students Online in Nursing Integrated Curricula (SONIC) project. This collaborative project between the Universities of Central Lancashire (lead), Liverpool John Moores, Northumbria, and Salford, set out to develop and evaluate web-based, resource-enriched scenarios to support students undertaking problem-based learning. Five scenarios were created which, though supporting nursing students have an interprofessional element within each. The scenarios relate to an older man with nutritional problems; a women requiring surgery; an older teenager with learning difficulties; a young man with mental health problems; and a baby with cardiac problems. The design of each scenario was undertaken by one of the institutions e.g. Salford undertook the Child Health scenario, with Northumbria designing two. Each scenario is placed within the institutions virtual learning environment (Blackboard/WebCT) which is only accessible by the students registered on the particular module. Thus a major part of the project was to develop an open access website which contained all the scenarios and information relating to the project itself. The website can be visited at www.uclan.ac.uk/sonic Each scenario is supported by questions and various resources, such as animations, video clips, key concepts, self-assessments, and further reading. As it is an open access website, materials are freely available, but a quick email to state how materials are being used is much appreciated. Evaluations were carried out with students and facilitators. Information regarding the evaluations can be obtained from the author cjgibbon@uclan.ac.uk Carolyn Gibbon |
